A dental extraction (also referred to as exodontia) is the removal of a tooth from the mouth. Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, including tooth decay that has destroyed enough tooth structure to render the tooth non-restorable. Extractions of impacted or problematic wisdom teeth are routinely performed, as are extractions of some permanent teeth to make space for treatment.

A consultation with our team at A&N Dental will put your mind at ease as we walk you through what to expect and why teeth are extracted, or sometimes why it is actually better if they are not pulled. We will also discuss any current medications that you may be taking to know what complications may exist and the details of the antibiotic pre-medication treatment that is followed to facilitate a safe and quick recovery.

A medical history is taken where you will be able to report any past problems you may have had with tooth extractions, such as bleeding problems. You will also be able to discuss any and all medical conditions, either treated or untreated, in order to ensure all the relevant details are considered for your health’s sake. The dentist will want to know about any medications you are taking, including supplements, over-the-counter, prescription or herbal remedies as respects their effects on clotting.

Other reasons to have teeth removed include mispositioned teeth, nonfunctional teeth or teeth that have become “mobile” as a result of periodontal or gum disease. The extraction involves numbing the area with an anesthetic as the socket will need to be expanded to separate the tooth from the ligament. The best comparison for the action required here is like that of pulling a tent stake by rocking it back and forth in order to dislodge it. It is the same with extracting teeth. Once this is achieved, the tooth will slide out easily.

Contact us for a free consultation and we can help allay your concerns by going over all your options. Very often, once the fear of the unknown is relieved, possibilities suddenly seem very promising and favorable.
